Is there such a thing as a "travel loan" in New Zealand?
Not as a distinct product — what people search for as a "travel loan" is almost always an unsecured personal loan or short term loan used to cover flights, accommodation or a package holiday. Lenders don't restrict how you use personal loan funds once approved, so the same products Kiwis use for home renovations or debt consolidation work just as well for a trip — the question is whether borrowing for travel is the right call for your situation.
What it actually costs
Because travel isn't an asset you can sell to repay the debt (unlike a car loan, which is secured against the vehicle), travel borrowing is unsecured and priced accordingly — you'll generally pay a higher interest rate than secured finance. Before borrowing, add up the total repayment (principal plus interest plus any establishment or ongoing fees) over the full loan term, not just the advertised rate, so you know the true cost of the holiday once it's paid off.
Alternatives worth checking first
- A dedicated travel rewards credit card — cards like the Flight Centre Mastercard or an American Express Airpoints card let you earn points on the spend itself and can offer an interest-free period if paid off promptly, which can work out cheaper than a personal loan if you can clear the balance quickly.
- A short, structured savings plan — even a few months of automatic transfers into a separate account reduces or removes the need to borrow at all.
- A short term loan for a smaller shortfall — if you only need to bridge a small gap (e.g. a deposit before a pay cycle), a short term loan may cost less overall than a larger personal loan taken for the full trip cost.
If you do decide to borrow
Only borrow what you can comfortably repay from your regular income after the trip — lenders are required under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA) to assess affordability before approving a loan, and it's worth doing that same check yourself before applying. Compare more than one lender's rate and total cost, confirm there's no penalty for paying the loan off early, and avoid any lender that pressures you to borrow more than you asked for.
